The Serralves Foundation is a renowned cultural institution whose main objective is to promote Portuguese and international contemporary art.
The Foundation houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, lush gardens, Serralves’ house and an auditorium.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The Serralves Contemporary Museum was inaugurated in 1999 in a modernist building designed specifically for this purpose that blends perfectly with the surrounding grounds. It has numerous temporary exhibitions that show the work of Portuguese and international contemporary artists.
The Foundation has a magnificent 18-hectare park that circles the museum. At the entrance, you’ll be handed a leaflet with various routes you can take through the gardens with detailed explanations of various parts, so you explore the park in depth. One of the highlights is Serralves’ house.
In summer, numerous concerts are held in the grounds of the Serralves Foundation.
Unless you’re staying in Porto for over a weekend or you’re extremely interested in contemporary art, the visit to Serralves Foundation can wait till the second time you visit the city. It is located in Foz, quite far from the city centre.
If you’re looking for a tranquil and captivating place to go for a walk, then Serralves Park is one of the most enjoyable places to visit.
